2026 is the year "AI agents that do the work" became the main battleground for two giants — OpenAI's ChatGPT Work and Anthropic's Claude Cowork. Neither is a chatbot; both are agents that actually do the work and ship finished deliverables. The question every organisation is asking: which one should you pick? This article compares them head-to-head — features, how they work, plans, strengths and weaknesses — and, most importantly, where organisations running an ERP should place an agent to stay safe.
In one line: ChatGPT Work wins on massive user base and office-style deliverables (docs/slides/sheets); Claude Cowork wins on working with real local files, running scripts in a sandbox, and technical work — choose by your team's core job, not by brand.
What Each One Is — a Quick Recap
Claude Cowork came first. Anthropic shipped a Research Preview on 12 January 2026 (starting on macOS for Max subscribers). It's an AI agent that runs on Claude Desktop, accesses real files and folders on your machine, creates/edits/deletes files, and runs scripts in a Sandbox VM isolated from your main system. Notably, most of Cowork's own code was written by Claude Code.
ChatGPT Work followed on 9 July 2026 alongside the GPT-5.6 model. It's an agent that runs for hours, pulls context across apps/files/workflows, and produces documents, spreadsheets, slides, reports and web apps — plus a Scheduled Tasks feature for recurring jobs. The key common ground: both are AI agents that "act," not just "answer" — shifting from Q&A to "hand off a job and it gets done." The differences are in how they work and ecosystem, more than in the concept.

Which Should You Choose?
There's no single right answer for every organisation — choose by your team's "core job":
- Choose ChatGPT Work if your team mainly produces docs/slides/reports, already uses ChatGPT, and wants recurring automation without installing another app.
- Choose Claude Cowork if your work touches a lot of real local files, needs to run scripts/analyse data, or wants a sandbox isolated from the main system for safety.
- Use both — many organisations pick tools by task, not by a single vendor, just as we compared in ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini.
Security warning: both can access files, browsers and your machine. The more permission you grant, the higher the risk of prompt injection via a web page or document they read — causing wrong actions or data leaks. Where an AI Agent Belongs in an ERP-Run Organisation
Whether you pick ChatGPT Work or Claude Cowork, the same principle applies: the agent is a work producer; the ERP is the source of truth. Let the agent handle the periphery — drafting a report from exported figures, building an executive deck, summarising documents — but keep accounting figures, inventory and purchase orders that must be auditable inside a system with access control and a full audit trail.
The safe pattern: let the agent read "copies/exports," not connect directly to your primary database — and let an ERP like Saeree ERP (deployable on-premise and in the cloud, with 2FA + fine-grained permissions) remain the owner of your organisation's "truth."
