"What Is Claude for Google Workspace? Claude Inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides — How to Install It and What It Can Do (Beta, October 2026)" — the short answer is Claude for Google Workspace is an add-on that puts Claude in a sidebar inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, where it reads the file you have open, proposes changes and makes them in place once you allow it. Anthropic opened the public beta on 6 October 2026 for every paid Claude plan at no extra cost. This article covers what it can do in each app, how to install it for one person or a whole organization, how the approval model works, the beta limits, and what IT needs to know about data before switching it on.

In one line: Claude for Google Workspace = a sidebar add-on in Docs, Sheets and Slides that reads the open file and edits it in place with your approval, one install for all three apps, in public beta since 6 October 2026 on Pro/Max/Team/Enterprise at no extra cost.

Before you read: Checked against Anthropic's Help Center article "Use Claude in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides", the claude.com product page and launch-day press coverage on 16 October 2026. The feature is in beta, so limits listed here may be lifted in later releases.

1. What it is, and how it differs from the connectors you already have

Before 6 October 2026, getting Claude to help with a Google file meant one of two things: paste the content into the chat, or use the Google Drive connector so Claude could read the file and answer in chat. Both had the same problem. The result never landed in the file itself. This time Anthropic shipped two things together.

  • A sidebar add-on: one install covers Docs, Sheets and Slides. Claude reads the file you have open, proposes changes, and makes them in place once you allow it.
  • Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors in chat (also beta): from claude.ai you can create or edit Google files without opening them.

It uses your existing Claude account, the same models, and the connectors and skills your organization has already enabled, with nothing extra to pay. This table compares the three routes available today, including Cowork, the desktop agent that works on local files.

2. What it can do in each app

Anthropic's examples are specific enough to show this is built for real office work, not just a question box beside the file.

AppTasks Anthropic listsHow edits appear in the file
Google DocsDraft from scratch · rewrite and restructure · turn notes into tables · audit a contract for undefined terms · fix headings and numbering · answer questions without editingProposed as cards you accept or reject one at a time, similar to suggestions
Google SheetsExplain what a formula calculates · build financial models · normalize inconsistent formats · debug VLOOKUP errors · create sensitivity tables and charts · pull in numbers from data sources through connectorsHighlights the cells it will change before acting
Google SlidesDraft slides from notes · split dense slides · standardize title formatting · insert charts in matching colours · restyle a whole deck · flag overlapping elementsShows new slides for review before you accept

A prompt that works in the Sheets sidebar on a file exported from an accounting system:

This sheet is the September budget vs actual by department.
1) Add "Variance" and "Variance %" columns at the end
2) Highlight rows where actual exceeds budget by more than 10% in orange
3) Build a summary of the 5 departments most over budget in a new sheet called "Top5"
Do not change the source figures in columns B to D

The last line matters. Saying which columns are off-limits lets Claude plan a safe edit from the start, and you see that plan before you click Allow.

3. How to install it, for one person or the whole organization

The first thing to know: the install path depends on your Google Workspace admin's Marketplace settings, not on your Claude plan. In organizations that lock the Marketplace, users see a greyed-out Install button or "This application is not allowed by your administrator" until the Google admin allows it.

  1. For yourself: open the Claude listing in the Google Workspace Marketplace, click Install, choose your Google account, review the permissions and click Allow. Reload any open file and Claude appears under the Extensions menu. One install covers all three apps.
  2. For the whole organization: a Google Workspace super administrator opens the same listing, clicks Admin install, then chooses the scope, everyone or specific groups or organizational units, accepts the terms and clicks Finish. Users just reload their files; nothing to install themselves. This route also bypasses a locked Marketplace.
  3. On the Claude side: sign in with a Claude account on a paid plan. Connectors your organization has enabled in Claude appear in the sidebar's + menu automatically.

Google asks for two permissions: to display and run third-party content in sidebars inside Google apps, and to view and manage the documents, spreadsheets or presentations the app is installed in. In practice Claude sees only the file you opened it in. It does not see your whole Drive, Gmail or Calendar unless you turn on those connectors yourself.

4. The approval model: what Claude may do, must ask for, and can never do

IT teams should read this part before rolling it out, because the default grants read, write and delete access inside the open file, while Claude must ask before acting.

LevelDetails
"Ask before edits" (default)Claude explains the planned change in plain language; you click Allow before it acts
"Accept all edits"Edits through to the end of the task without pausing, except for security-sensitive actions
Always requires approval (both modes)Inserting web images · adding links · removing access
Never permittedSharing files · changing ownership · creating menus or automations · loading arbitrary web pages

Anthropic's own warning: "in a busy file, check the result." For files several people edit at once, or sheets with formulas chained across tabs, keep the ask-before-edits mode and review the outcome, especially sheets that feed management reports.

5. Beta limits to know before you plan around it

AreaLimitWhat it means in practice
Time per operationA single long operation can run for up to six minutes before Google stops itBreak big jobs into several prompts
BrowserChrome, Edge or Safari only; Firefox is not supportedTell users before rollout
Chat historyStored locally in the browser, per file, not synced across devicesClearing site data loses it; keep important results in the file
Office filesWord, Excel and PowerPoint files opened in Google are unsupported; convert firstTeams that pass .xlsx around gain a conversion step
Other Drive filesCannot open, create or copy other files, and the sidebar must stay open during workUse the chat connectors for cross-file work
DocsCannot read or reply to comments · cannot accept existing suggestions · cannot manage document tabsComment-based review stays manual
SheetsCannot read Connected Sheets tabs (BigQuery) · no triggers, custom menus or scheduled refreshExtract BigQuery tabs to regular tabs first
SlidesCharts Claude creates are images, not linked Sheets charts, so they do not update when numbers changeMonthly decks with live numbers should keep linked charts

6. Where the data goes, and what Enterprise gets and does not get yet

Per the Help Center, inputs and outputs are deleted from Anthropic's systems within 30 days (unless your organization has set a different retention policy), and Anthropic does not use this content to train its models. For Team and Enterprise it is governed by your organization's Commercial Terms and Data Processing Addendum, the same as ordinary Claude use. Plan-by-plan retention is covered in our article on Claude data governance and security.

Enterprise featureStatus in the add-on (beta)
Compliance API (prompts, responses, tool calls and edits)Supported
Customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK)Supported
OpenTelemetry audit exportSupported
Third-party inference (Bedrock, Vertex AI, Azure, gateways)Not yet
Zero Data Retention (ZDR)Not yet (see what ZDR is)
HIPAA coverageNot yet

For Thai organizations with personal data in files: the add-on sees only the open file, which bounds the scope better than a Drive-wide connector, but your PDPA (Personal Data Protection Act) rules still apply. Decide which file types Claude may be used on when they contain customer or employee data, and organizations that require ZDR should wait for a later release.

7. Who benefits first in Thailand

Google Workspace users in Thailand cluster in three groups: universities on Google Workspace for Education, small and mid-sized businesses that started on Gmail, and startups. Most government agencies run on other platforms. The add-on fits the first three best. Tasks that pay off quickly:

  • Accounting and finance: files exported from the accounting system or ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) into Sheets. Let Claude add variances, normalize formats, find anomalous rows and explain formulas a previous colleague left behind. The source figures stay in the accounting system; Sheets is only the analysis layer.
  • HR: draft and restructure policies, announcements and handbooks in Docs with consistent headings and numbering.
  • Sales and marketing: bring customer decks to one format, split overloaded slides and insert charts from prepared numbers.
  • Lecturers and researchers: structure long documents, catch undefined terms and build tables from notes in Docs.

From our side as an ERP vendor, this add-on does not replace the core system. It replaces the hours lost tidying files after export. The ERP stays the source of truth and Claude in Sheets is the analysis assistant at the end of the line. Organizations that want Claude to read internal systems directly with role-based permissions can do that over MCP (Model Context Protocol); see Claude Solutions.

8. Rolling it out without friction

  1. Check whether you already have Claude Team or Enterprise. If not, see what Claude Team is and every plan's limits. We procure it with a quotation in Thai Baht and a Thai tax invoice (see our Claude procurement service).
  2. Have the Google Workspace admin use Admin install for a pilot group only, for example one accounting team.
  3. Set file rules: which file types are allowed, which are not, and keep ask-before-edits as the default.
  4. Pick two or three repetitive, measurable tasks and compare time before and after over two weeks.
  5. Keep important results in the file; do not rely on the browser-local chat history.

Conclusion

  • Claude for Google Workspace entered public beta on 6 October 2026: a sidebar add-on for Docs, Sheets and Slides (one install, three apps) plus connectors for chat, on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise at no extra cost.
  • Claude sees only the open file and the connectors you enable. It asks before every edit by default, some actions always need approval, and some, such as sharing files or changing ownership, are never allowed.
  • The install route depends on the Google Workspace admin, not the Claude plan. Locked Marketplaces need the admin to allow or install it.
  • Beta limits that affect real work: six minutes per operation, no Firefox, Office files must be converted, chat history lives on one device, and Slides charts are not linked to Sheets.
  • Content is not used for training and is deleted within 30 days. Enterprise gets the Compliance API, CMEK and audit export, but ZDR, HIPAA and third-party inference are not supported yet.

A good tool is not the one that can do everything. It is the one that tells you what it can see, what it will change, and stops to ask before it acts.
