What Is Hermes Agent?

What Is Hermes Agent? — Open-Source AI Agent from Nous Research
  • 16
  • May

While most AI Agent debates focus on which model is best, an open-source project quietly emerged in early 2026 with a growth curve unlike anything before — Hermes Agent by Nous Research. It hit 135,000+ GitHub stars in under three months, earning the title "fastest-growing open-source AI agent framework of 2026" per Tencent Cloud Techpedia.

What Is Hermes Agent?

Hermes Agent is an open-source AI agent (MIT License) from Nous Research — the team behind the Hermes LLM family (Hermes 2, 3, 4) that many engineers run on Hugging Face. What sets Hermes Agent apart from a typical chatbot are two things: "it doesn't forget" and "it teaches itself".

Three core ideas make Hermes different:

  • Persistent Memory — runs continuously on your server and remembers what it has done. No restart between sessions.
  • Self-Created Skills — when Hermes solves a hard problem, it writes a "Skill document" so it never has to re-derive the solution. Skills are searchable, shareable, and compatible with the agentskills.io open standard.
  • Multi-Platform Gateway — connects Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, Email, and CLI through 20+ platforms via a single gateway.

In short: Hermes Agent invests in learning skills for you — the longer you use it, the more capable it gets. The opposite of a chatbot that forgets every time you close the window.

Who Built It? — Meet Nous Research

Nous Research is an AI research firm whose team previously trained the Hermes model series on Hugging Face. They are also known for their RL training framework Atropos and the Hermes 4 model released in 2025, with strong hybrid reasoning and accurate tool calling.

In February 2026, Nous Research launched Hermes Agent under the tagline "The agent that grows with you." The project is currently at v0.13.0 "The Tenacity Release" (May 7, 2026) with hundreds of contributors worldwide.

Why Is It Growing So Fast?

In a market saturated with AI agents — OpenClaw, Claude Code, Cursor, Aider, ChatGPT Atlas — why did Hermes outpace them all? The answer comes down to three differences:

Difference Hermes Agent Typical Agent
Memory Persistent — lives on your server, remembers across sessions Restarts every time / limited to context window
Skills Agent writes its own skills, compatible with agentskills.io standard You write prompt templates manually every time
Deployment Runs on a $5 VPS, GPU cluster, or serverless Subscription service / runs only on your local machine
Model Lock-in No lock-in — supports 12+ providers (Claude, GPT, Llama, Local) Usually tied to a single provider

Key Features in Hermes Agent v0.13

1. Learning Loop — Improves Itself Automatically

Hermes ships with "agent-curated memory with periodic nudges" — the agent reflects on its own work, picks the memories worth keeping, and writes new skills when it tackles hard problems. Its skill self-improvement feature refines existing skills each time they are used.

2. 70+ Built-in Tools

Hermes comes with a comprehensive tool registry including:

  • Web search + browser automation — choose your backend: Browserbase cloud, Browser Use cloud, local Chrome (CDP), or local Chromium
  • Terminal execution — 7 backends: local, Docker, SSH, Singularity, Modal, Daytona, Vercel
  • File editing — read/write/edit any file
  • Memory management — query and update its own memory
  • Subagent delegation — spawn child agents that run 3 in parallel by default (configurable)
  • Messaging delivery — send messages out via Telegram, Slack, Discord
  • Home Assistant — control your smart home

3. Programmatic Tool Calling (PTC)

Hermes' execute_code feature collapses multi-step pipelines into a single inference call. Instead of calling tools one at a time (which burns tokens), Hermes can write a Python script and run an entire workflow in a single round.

4. MCP Support

Hermes supports Model Context Protocol (MCP) from Anthropic — connect to any MCP server to extend tool capabilities. Examples: connect MCPs for databases, Slack workspaces, Notion, and so on without modifying source code.

5. Voice Mode

v0.13 supports real-time voice interaction across CLI, Telegram, and Discord — full end-to-end voice control.

6. Built-in Cron Scheduler

Includes a cron subsystem out of the box. Schedule jobs in plain English: "every 9 AM, summarize the Jira sprint and post to Slack #pm." Hermes handles it daily — no separate cron setup required.

Which LLMs Does It Support?

Hermes follows a "Bring Your Own Model" philosophy — no provider lock-in. Use your own API key:

Provider Recommended Models Best For
Anthropic Claude Opus 4.7, Sonnet 4.6 Most accurate tool use — ideal for agents
OpenAI GPT-5.2, o3 Reasoning and multi-step planning
Nous Portal Hermes 4 (own brand) Native skill format support
OpenRouter 200+ models in one gateway A/B test different models in one place
Local (Ollama, vLLM) Llama 3, Qwen, DeepSeek $0/month — data stays on your machine
Others NovitaAI, NVIDIA NIM (Nemotron), Xiaomi MiMo, z.ai/GLM, Kimi/Moonshot, MiniMax, Hugging Face

Cost-saving tip: Run Hermes with a local model via Ollama → LLM cost = $0. Best for repetitive tasks where data privacy matters (read Open Source vs Commercial AI comparison).

Deployment — Where Can It Run?

Nous's official docs say Hermes "lives wherever you put it — a $5 VPS, a GPU cluster, or serverless infrastructure." That means:

Deployment Best For Notes
Local (Mac/Linux/Windows) Trial / personal use Agent stops when machine sleeps
VPS (DigitalOcean, Linode, AWS Lightsail) 24/7 continuous workloads Starts at ~$5/month
Docker container Dev/staging environments Dockerfile included
GPU cluster Running large local models Multi-GPU supported
Serverless (Modal, Vercel) Periodic, non-24/7 workloads Pay only for execution time

Pros & Cons

Pros Cons
MIT License — commercial use allowed v0.13 is not a stable release — APIs change between versions
Persistent memory + skills — gets better over time You manage your own server — no official managed service yet
No vendor lock-in — swap LLMs anytime Skill marketplace is still small compared to OpenClaw's ClawHub
Multi-platform messaging in a single gateway Requires Linux + command-line skills
Built-in cron + subagent delegation Documentation is English-only

Security Considerations

Like any AI Agent with shell access, browser, and messaging permissions, Hermes carries risks that need to be managed:

1. Prompt Injection — when the agent reads external messages/documents/emails, hidden instructions can hijack it into doing things you didn't intend.

2. Marketplace skills — review the source of every skill before installing. Don't trust skills from unknown publishers.

3. API key handling — store keys in a secret manager (e.g. HashiCorp Vault), not in config files.

4. Network isolation — run inside a VM/container with its network isolated from production systems (read more in AI Governance).

Hermes Agent and ERP Work

Note: Saeree ERP is currently developing its own AI Assistant (in training). Hermes Agent is an external tool that organizations can use to support ERP workflows.

Examples where Hermes reduces coordination tax in ERP work:

  • Daily status digest — schedule Hermes to post the count of pending approvals + batch job status + URL to Saeree ERP every morning (never push financial data into chat).
  • Document drafting — let Hermes draft documents from your company's templates (always human-review before send; never auto-execute).
  • Inbox triage — Hermes prioritizes lead email into HOT/WARM/SPAM (read-only — no auto-reply).
  • Knowledge base search — connect Hermes to internal docs via MCP so staff can ask questions through Slack/Telegram with 2FA.

Important: never push costing/accounting/payroll/customer data/source code into a chat platform or cloud LLM. For sensitive analysis, run Hermes against a local model via Ollama and send only a URL link for recipients to log in and view.

Summary — Who Is Hermes For?

Hermes Agent is a "long-running agent platform" suited to workloads that differ from IDE-based agents like Cursor or Claude Code:

Best For Not Suited For
24/7 automation (PM digests, monitoring, triage) In-IDE coding (Cursor / Claude Code wins)
Teams with Linux + DevOps skills Users who need a point-and-click UI
Repetitive workflows that benefit from skill memory One-off tasks that don't need memory
Organizations that want self-hosting (no vendor lock-in) Organizations with no server team

2026 isn't the year of "one agent to rule them all" — it's the year of "the agent stack." Pick Claude Code for coding, Hermes for long-running automation, Cursor for IDE editing.
